Shoshana Rubin has been working on film and television productions in the costume department for over twenty years. For the last ten years, she has spent more of her time working to educate young folks who are interested in the art and craft of costume design. Meanwhile, she earned a Masters of Arts in Education at Loyola University a few years ago while raising her young family. Her adventures began as a young child fascinated with the idea of creating characters through the use of costumes, thus helping to facilitate the telling of their stories. After finishing a Bachelors in Fine Arts at the University of Michigan she dove right into work on feature films in the costume department and has not turned back.

Best friends since childhood, Pappas and Ahlers had combined backgrounds in art history, jewelry, real estate, and interiors before joining forces. Oscars 2023: Best Costume Design Predictions

A national treasure in his native Brazil, Sig Bergamin is a decorator and art collector with clients in the United States, Europe, and South America. A typical Bergamin project is exuberant and full of life, and the designer’s mastery of the mix has a tropical flair and modernist touches. In 1998, Alexa Hampton took over the world-famous firm of her father, Mark Hampton. She is a specialist in maximalism and has completed a wide range of designs for domestic and international projects, from New York City to Hangzhou, China.

The films that won in this category most recently are “Cruella” (2022), “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2021), “Little Women” (2020), and “Black Panther” (2019). This year’s winner will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, airing March 12 on ABC. She also becomes the first person to win a costume design Oscar for designing both an original film and its sequel. Variety's unmatched coverage gives its readership unbeatable exposure in print and online and provides inside reports on all the contenders in this year's awards season races. The most frustrating thing about this category is how myopic the voters often are when it comes to Oscar-worthy costumes. Every now and then there’s a cool The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert oddity (totally agree with you placing that among the top five, by the way), but for the most part, contemporary costumes are rarely even nominated, let alone win.

Jenny Beavan – “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris”

The film’s lack of support from other chapters does make it more likely this will only win one of its three Oscar nominations, and this probably won’t be it. The Costume Designers Guild handed out their awards last week, with “Elvis” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” winning their respective races for Period and Sci-Fi/Fantasy, although all five Oscar nominees were represented across those two categories. Costume designer Quita Alfred gave a masterclass in research when it came to Sarah Polley’s film, Women Talking. When it came to designing the costumes for the characters in the film, Alfred went straight to the source and learned from actual Mennonite communities to learn about and source fabrics. She then responsibly and authentically recreated plain dress for each of the films characters. Not to mention, Alexander Skarsgård’s berserker costume, countless viking costumes, the valkyrie look, and of course Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman).

In their rooms, fine European antiques meet mirrored walls and gutsy artwork; they use intense colors and delicate patterns with equal panache.
